Launched in October 2024, the initiative took its first tangible steps that same month by equipping rangers of the Tana and Tedzmi Protected Landscape Management Agency and Gori Municipality Development Agency with essential equipment. This included thermal drones, wildfire prevention tools, camera traps, body cameras, and other necessary gear to enhance conservation efforts.

A key component of the project is the development of a comprehensive Management Plan for the Tana and Tedzmi Protected Landscape (TT PL), created through a participatory process involving key stakeholders. During a three-day workshop, environmental expert Anzor Gogotidze introduced participants—including representatives from the Gori Municipality, protected area management agency, educational institutions, civil society, and businesses—to the categories, goals, objectives, and benefits of protected areas. The workshop also initiated the process of stakeholder mapping. As a result, a preliminary document identifying key stakeholders, values, and threats has already been created. This document was further discussed and refined during field visits and community meetings held prior to a follow-up session in June.
In June, the project received a significant boost with the arrival of Czech experts, who collaborated in the field with their Georgian counterparts over a five-day visit. The Czech team shared crucial findings and recommendations based on their observations. They will continue to provide remote support and, in 2026, will host a Georgian delegation in the Czech Republic to exchange experiences and best practices on-site.
Simultaneously, a market analysis is being conducted to identify priority areas for local business development within the protected landscape—particularly in the sectors of ecotourism and agriculture. This analysis will guide efforts to promote sustainable economic activities that align with conservation goals.
Another significant milestone is the initiation of work on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). This foundational document offers valuable insights for decision-makers, the implementation team, and stakeholders. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that upcoming activities are well-planned and that the potential risks and threats identified during the assessment are effectively addressed.
Additionally, a “Drone Operation” training was held for the rangers of the protected area. The training covered both theoretical and practical aspects of drone usage, emphasizing safe and effective operation. This capacity-building effort is expected to significantly enhance the ability of the management team to monitor and respond to challenges in the landscape.
The project represents a dynamic and inclusive approach to conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development. Through international cooperation, local empowerment, and strategic planning, it is laying the groundwork for a resilient future for the Tana and Tedzmi Protected Landscape and the people who depend on it.
